Ice breaker: Road Salt: A Necessary Evil?

February 25 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

No one likes to drive on icy roads, so road salt provides an important service during winter months in northern climes. However, excessive road salt application can have negative impacts on our aquatic resources. Dr. Alan Steinman, a leading researcher from the Annis Water Resources Institute at Grand Valley State University, will provide a brief overview of the road salt dilemma and focus on a number of studies from his lab examining the ecological effects of road salt in a chain of lakes in Grand Rapids. Dr. Steinman will also discuss a salt issue of a totally different kind, currently plaguing Ottawa County.
