Description of the Program

Water Explorers Club

Join the Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council in an engaging after-school program that dives into the wonders of water and science. Through hands-on activities, fun games, and creative crafts, kids will explore the importance of water in our world. They’ll learn about the water cycle and watersheds, water quality, aquatic life, and invasive species. Perfect for curious minds and budding scientists, this club inspires a love for nature while building awareness of everyone’s role in preserving water resources in our community.

After School Care Program Overview

Session Topics

Session 1 – Watersheds and Water Cycle

  • Starter activity: water cycle or watershed coloring page find yourself on the watershed map
  • Game: watershed Dice Game
  • Lesson: Watershed model in a kiddie pool with colored water
  • Craft: Buttons with a cutout of a favorite watershed or water body 

Session 2 – Pollution

  • Starter activity: pollution coloring page what’s so great about the great lakes
  • Lesson: Watershed Model Demonstration and labeling local map with land uses
  • Game: water quality testing
  • Craft: Color a reusable shopping bag.

Session 3 – Aquatic Ecosystems and Macros

  • Starter activity: Michigan Aquatic Species Coloring Pages
  • Lesson: macroinvertebrates as indicators for upper el, macros as food chain for lower el
  • Game: food chain game
  • Craft: Make a mayfly

Session 4 – Invasive Species

  • Starter activity: Invasive Species Word Search
  • Lesson: What is an invasive species, and check out some real invasive species
  • Game: Invasive Species Game
  • Craft: Make a paper towel tube lamprey
